We love this week: the leaves are starting to try on new colors, cultural spaces are starting to launch seasonal blockbusters (Egon Schiele at the Neue!), and New Yorky people (like Patricia Field) and institutions (like Open House, Electric Literature, and more) are filling the next seven days with more than we know what to do with.
One way to respond? Slow down and opt out. Hear a 5 hour performance of Morton Feldman’s work at Hauser & Wirth on Tuesday, or a 24-hour Ragas performance at Pioneer Works from Saturday into Sunday.
Or: lace up your fall boots and try squeezing it all in (our strategy).
The best of this week:

Music Mondays presents ModernMedieval Voices, Grand Electric and Alex Sopp
A gift to New Yorkers everywhere: Music Mondays, the organization producing free classical concerts each month in a big, gorgeous church on the Upper West Side. Today’s program “explores the intersection between medieval vocal music and modern chamber music, from the meditative to the ecstatic.” As always, there’s a lil reception after the show so you can meet the crowd, encompassing everyone from young Bach-heads to the coolest elders of Manhattan.

In Performance: Morton Feldman’s For Philip Guston
“On the occasion of the exhibition Philip Guston. Room, Sea & Sky,” Hauser & Wirth on 18th Street hosts “a rare performance of Morton Feldman’s ‘For Philip Guston' performed by the renowned artist collective AMOC* (American Modern Opera Company). Composed in 1984, ‘For Philip Guston,’ a nearly five-hour trio, is Morton Feldman’s poignant homage to Guston.”
We’re into Feldman’s experiments in durational music from his later years that demand effort from the performers and audience alike. There’s a kind “we’re in this together” vibe such that by the end, you feel physically and spiritually connected to the music and the people you end up sitting next to for what adds up to more than half of a workday.

Egon Schiele: Living Landscapes opens at The Neue Galerie
The fall blockbuster art season is upon us. The great Austrian hitmaker Schiele is best known for portraits of people, but he also produced wildly charismatic portraits of places and plants (ie, “landscapes”) which are on display at this show. FYI, there’s an opening night lecture with the curator, Christian Bauer, at 6:30p. Reserve your spot here.

Open House New York Weekend kicks off
Open House New York Weekend is the glorious annual festival “that opens 270+ places across the five boroughs for behind-the-scenes tours and special access at skyscrapers, power plants, artist studios, and everything in between.”
Access two types of events: Open Access (no tickets required, just check open/close times), and Ticketed (tickets required for timed entry.) This Gothamist article breaks down some of the best spots. We tend toward tours of mansions with big gardens for a free shot of nature, like the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum in Pelham Bay Park.

Anohni and the Johnsons at BAM
When we think about living musical legends, Anohni is toward the top of the list. You may know her from her work as Anthony and the Johnsons, who made a splash in the early 2000’s and released several acclaimed albums. Then Anohni transitioned into herself and embarked on a brief solo career, dropping the sublime solo record Hopelessness in 2016. She reunited with the Johnsons band last year to release My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross and just like that: Anohni and the Johnsons are a band again.
They’re playing two nights at BAM’s Howard Gilman Opera House (their first live shows in a decade) and, as of the time of this publication, tickets are still available across both nights. We just got a nosebleed seat for Saturday and couldn’t be happier with the purchase.

An evening with the Modigliani Quartet at The Morgan
We love hearing classical music at the Morgan because it feels timeless (and because we feel extremely interesting and young around the chic, mostly elder patrons). The acclaimed Paris-based Modigliani Quartet presents an evening of chamber music featuring classic works from Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Turina.

A lil plug for our friend Andrew Boos, a great textile artist who works out of Gowanus. Although not officially participating in the open studios, get in touch and set up a studio visit if you’re in the market for the prettiest works you’ve ever seen or touched.
