This week, the mad geniuses behind CHERYL throw a Puttanesca-themed party with unlimited breadsticks. It’s a good time to carbo-load before the marathon of spring art events kick off over the next two weeks, leading up to Tribeca Gallery Night on May 9 and all the art fairs over that weekend.
Want to get ahead? Paid subscribers get access to the Days & Nights Big List for a complete report for the entire future. Never miss a thing again.
Important PSAs before we get into the week:
You can and should adopt a butterfly at the Museum of Natural History, then debate the ethics of charging more and less for certain butterflies (justice for the Zebra Longwings)

Opening reception for Dana Powell's The Moon is Still Free
What is it that the Buddha said? “Emptiness is a form of fullness” or something like that? So, too, with Dana Powell’s paintings. The canvases are still shots paused in time, lacking action and people although both are suggested. They’re so uncluttered with extra space to breathe, so they can slowly become whole cinematic universes in their own right. It’s magic how it works.
Also opening tonight at the gallery: Laura Lima's latest installment of the remarkable Balé Literal series, where objects dance in space. It reminds us of Urs Fischer’s Play, one of the best things we’ve ever seen.
Tanya Bonakdar, Chelsea

Opening reception for DEVIATIONS at James Fuentes
Curated by the wonderful painter Oscar yi Hou (who had a stand-out solo show at James Fuentes last year), Deviations is a group show featuring a dozen artists, mostly friends of yi Hou, mostly making portraits, self-portraits, or sculpture. We love when artists act as curators.
